| The PRM StepDrive works like a car's automatic transmission. Traditionally, boats rely on prop slippage through the water to overcome the need for more than one forward gear but, for fast planing boats, that wastes considerable performance potential in the critical acceleration phase. 
StepDrive activates a reduction gear at pre-set revs to provide vastly improved acceleration. The diagram shows when the pre-set function kicks in. Once planing speed is reached, the automatic control then drops back into the standard gear ratio to maintain comfortable cruising speed. Because everything happens automatically, the driver has no additional functions to perform and no additional controls to worry about. Everyone on board just experiences smoother and more exhilarating performance! For many boats, StepDrive allows the fitting of larger props than before. This further enhances a boat's top end and cruising speeds For boats using inland waterways that would normally have undersized props to aid slow speed handling, StepDrive allows them to retain their original 'sea-going' props whilst still halving available 'creep' speed.
